Novak Djokovic will defend his Australian Open title
Djokovic has been granted a medical exemption: Australian Open 2022
Novak Djokovic has confirmed that he will compete in the Australian Open due to a medical exemption. The defending champion has already declined to say if he has had his Covid-19 vaccine, which is required to compete in Melbourne unless an exemption is given.
The world number one abruptly dropped out of Serbia’s ATP Cup team in Sydney, fueling rumors that the nine-time winner and vaccination sceptic might skip the season’s first major. However, Australian Open boss Craig Tiley announced this week that several unvaccinated players have been granted waivers to compete, and Djokovic appears to be one among them.
Djokovic tweeted, “Happy New Year! Wishing you all health, love & joy in every moment & may you feel love & respect towards all beings on this wonderful planet. I’ve spent fantastic quality time with loved ones over break & today I’m heading Down Under with an exemption permission.” Let’s go 2022!
Rafael Nadal arrives in Melbourne ahead of the Australian Open, the season’s first Grand Slam. On January 17, the Australian Open will begin in Melbourne.
